Catch- 22 in Afghanistan

http://www.southasiaathudson.org/blog/2018/1/8/catch-22-in-afghanistan

Pakistan is the Yugoslavia of South Asia. Probably the greatest of all potential Pakistani pressure  points is ethnic separatism, which is an existential threat. Pakistan was founded on the religion of Islam and is composed primarily of five ethnic groups that never coexisted, the Bengalis, Punjabis, Pashtuns, Sindhis and Baloch. Pakistan’s Islamic nationalism program was specifically designed to suppress ethnic separatism, an effort that eventually led to the proliferation of Islamic terrorist groups within its borders and their use as instruments of Pakistan’s foreign policy. Exploitation of ethnic separatism within Pakistan, such as in Balochistan, remains an option. That is, fight the Pakistani-sponsored insurgency in Afghanistan with an insurgency affecting its own vital interests. Internal instability is a concern not lost on the Chinese and a factor that could determine the outcome of China’s investment in CPEC. ... Read more »

Education is arguably the single most important thing in the modern era. It’s the ultimate tool which can enable people to move up the social mobility ladder and liver better lives. As a result, inclusive and equitable quality education is one of the most talked about Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of United Nations. In that backdrop an educational emergency was imposed in Balochistan in 2013 and extra emphasis was laid on education but not anymore.

Abdul Rahim Ziaratwal, Parliamentary Leader of Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), took charge of education ministry of Balochistan in January 2014. Since then all the gains made in first half of the tenure of the incumbent government under education emergency are being rolled back due to political interference.

Since incumbent minister has assumed power, the favourite past time of the education ministry has been to transfer the top officers in education department who do not dance to the tunes of political bosses. ... Read more »

Indian delegation at UNHRC.

India on Thursday raised the issue of Balochistan at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva and urged the UN body to take a "clear-cut stance" against atrocities committed by Pakistan, adding that the people of the state are “waging for decades a bitter and brave struggle against daily abuse”.

The Indian delegation also slammed Pakistan for raking up Jammu and Kashmir at the UNHRC for propagandist purposes, reminding Islamabad of its obligation under UN resolutions to first vacate the illegal occupation of the Indian state. ... Read more »

U.S. Afghan And South Asian Policy Suffers From Strategic Stagnation

By: Lawrence Sellin

President Trump is seeking what he called a "historic" 9 percent increase in military spending, even as the United States has wound down major wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and remains the world's strongest military power. Trump will ask Congress to boost Pentagon spending in the next fiscal year by $54 billion in his first budget proposal and slash the same amount from non-defense spending, including a large reduction in foreign aid, a White House budget official said. The president does not have the final say on federal spending. His plan for the military is part of a budget proposal to Congress. Although controlled by his fellow Republicans, Congress will not necessarily follow his plans. Budget negotiations with lawmakers can take months to play out. Officials familiar with Trump's budget blueprint said the defense increase would be financed partly by cuts to the State Department, Environmental Protection Agency and other non-defense programs. Trump's budget will not seek cuts in federal social programs such as Social Security and Medicare, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said. REUTERS/Alaa Al-Marjani

While Washington D.C. frets over military stalemate and troop levels, American policy in Afghanistan and South Asia is about to be overtaken by events, which potentially could render the U.S. strategically irrelevant for a generation or more.

Even the dimmest foreign policy analyst should recognize by now that the U.S. and NATO cannot succeed in Afghanistan without a significant change in the strategic environment because Pakistan controls the operational tempo of the war and the supply of our troops. ... Read more »

The 7th NFC Award, assessed on the basis of almost a decade-old reports, robs the province of its due share

After the 18th Amendment, the 7th National Finance Commission (NFC) was the second biggest achievement of the last PPP-led government.

The 7th NFC altered the revenue distribution in favour of smaller provinces and Balochistan was dubbed as the biggest beneficiary. However, what is not known is that Balochistan is still being deprived of approximately Rs28 billion annually from its share in the federal divisible pool due to technical wizardry. ... Read more »

Deny the light of education make the masses blind, lead them anywhere you wish…

A university professor wrote an expressive message to his students at the doctorate, masters and bachelors levels and places it at the entrance in a university in South Africa.

This is the message:

Collapsing of any nation does not require the use of bombs or long range missiles.
It only requires lowering the quality of education and allowing the students to cheat in examinations.
Patients die in the hands of such doctors.
Justice is lost in the hands of such judges.
Money is lost in the hands of such accountants.
Buildings collapse in the hands of such engineers.
Humanity dies in the hands of such religious scholars.
The collapse of education is the collapse of a nation.

Baloch leaders’ teachers, intellectuals, society and students must think about these words, why in Balochistan cheating is allowed openly and even promoted and education is of so low standards? ... Read more »
