At this RUSI conference, representatives from the UK, Pakistan and China will discuss opportunities for collaboration on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
RUSI is currently working on a project funded by the UK government on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

GENEVA: March 24, 2017. (Ahmar Mustikhan, Washington DC Bureau Chief) Pakistan, despite backing of powerful China, Thursday was put on the mat by a Baloch human rights defender at a key UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, with the backing the US, UK, Canada the Netherlands and Norway.

The Baloch speaker Abdul Nawaz Bugti, 24, who belongs to the Baloch Republican Party, said in his statement blasted the so-called China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), for spelling death and destruction for the Baloch in their France-sized homeland of Balochistan. He said since China and Pakistan began work on the CPEC 2015, hundreds of thousands of Baloch people have been “forcefully displaced from their hometowns along the CPEC route,” Bugti said. He added that a special force of 12,000 army personnel has been created and deployed for “massacring or displacing the local populace.” Many international observers liken the situation in Balochistan as slow motion genocide. ... BHRO brings forth reports of human rights’ violation taking place due to the rigid counter insurgency policies of Government. International human rights organizations and media are not allowed in Balochistan, and local media don’t cover stories related to Balochistan due to extreme censorship by military and State’s other institutions, therefore Balochistan has remained unheard. Some local media and human rights organizations have reported human rights violations by forces time to time but have faced serious consequences in the form of banning of newspapers, abduction and killing of journalists and human rights activists. Not only international community and international media are silent on such a serious humanitarian crisis but the fellow countrymen of other provinces are also unaware of the ongoing situation in Balochistan.

According to local organizations and political parties, more than 20,000 people were abducted and are still missing, and more than 3,500 mutilated bodies were found dumped in different areas of Balochistan. Among them most of the abductees and killed people were political activists. Mass graves were also recovered from different parts of Balochistan but no investigation has been conducted so far, nor has any step been taken for the identification of the buried corpses. Due to rigid counter insurgency policies and military operations, thousands of people have migrated to different areas of Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab, and living a very miserable life. As most areas in Balochistan are totally under military control and all communication means are blocked by security forces, reports on the area represent barely 20-25% of the data. ... Read more »
